Why does makeup look patchy on my face? - 6 reasons and solutions

The makeup not sitting smoothly on the skin is often not related to the quality of the foundation but to the preparation of the skin and the application technique.

Milli.Az presents the main causes:

Inadequate moisturizing
When the skin is dry, the foundation appears cracked and flaky on the surface.

Apply a moisturizer suitable for your skin type before makeup and wait for the skin to fully absorb it (about 5-10 minutes).

Dead skin residues
Dead cells accumulated on the surface of the skin prevent the smooth spreading of makeup.

Use a gentle peeling (exfoliation) 1-2 times a week to cleanse the skin surface from dead cells.

Wrong primer selection
Sometimes the primer you use does not match your foundation. For instance, mixing a silicone-based primer with a water-based foundation causes the makeup to "ball up" (become patchy).

Make sure the primer and foundation have the same base (both water-based or both silicone-based).

Excessive product use
Makeup applied in thick layers accumulates in the skin pores and creates an artificial, uneven appearance.

Apply the product in thin layers, adding more only to problematic areas if needed.

Incorrect application technique
Spreading (rubbing) the foundation on the skin or using coarse brushes irritates the skin and creates unevenness.

Apply with a damp makeup sponge using light tapping (small touches).

Products unsuitable for the skin type
Applying very oily products on oily skin or excessively matte (drying) products on dry skin causes makeup to deteriorate quickly.

Properly determine your skin type and choose products with appropriate textures accordingly.

Wait for the sunscreen you applied before makeup to be completely absorbed.

Do not use too much powder; this can make the skin appear drier and older than it is.

It is better to clean the makeup that has deteriorated during the day with a moist towelette and reapply rather than adding a fresh layer on top.
