In the evening when US President Donald Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the state of Florida, the Kremlin announced that Kyiv had targeted Russian President Vladimir Putin's residence with unmanned aerial vehicles.
The next day, Trump stated that he received information about the attack directly from Putin and that the news angered him: “I heard this from President Putin and got very upset. It is a very sensitive period now. Attacking is one thing, but targeting someone's residence or home is completely another matter.”
Zelensky immediately firmly denied the Kremlin's claim and said that the news of a “strike on Putin's residence” was a complete fabrication.
According to the Kremlin's statement, allegedly 91 drones released toward Putin's residence were destroyed by Russia’s air defense systems. Moscow reports no material damage or human loss as a result of the attack. Nevertheless, Russia announced that it is preparing retaliatory strikes against Ukraine. Moreover, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated in a Telegram channel post that due to the alleged attack, “Moscow will reconsider its position on negotiations.”
Medianews.az reports that a editorial article has been published in the US newspaper “Wall Street Journal” regarding the issue.
The article states that the claims about a drone attack on Putin’s residence raise serious questions. The newspaper emphasizes, citing the expert Grace Mepps from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), that when Ukraine delivers a real strike deep into Russian territory, it usually immediately leaves traces: reports from local residents and officials, drone debris, footage showing air defense systems activating, fires, explosions, smoke and haze...
The article points out that none of these types of evidence are present regarding the alleged attack on Putin’s residence. It is further noted that regarding targeting heads of state, Russia has repeatedly made attempts against Ukraine in this domain: “During the war, Moscow has tried several times to physically eliminate Volodymyr Zelensky, and even assassination plots have been uncovered in the territories of NATO member countries. In September 2025, a Russian cruise missile fell on the building housing the Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers in Kyiv.”
Despite all this, Zelensky continues to conduct negotiations to stop the war. Putin, however, states that Russia does not intend to cease fighting until Ukraine and its partners accept all of Russia’s demands.”
The editorial in the “Wall Street Journal” concludes that the claim of an attack on Putin’s residence is intended to disrupt peace talks, spoil the positive atmosphere between Trump and Zelensky, and does not reflect the truth.
