Former Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Ground Forces, retired Lieutenant General Yevgeny Buzhinsky has warned about the potential emergence of a new phase of confrontation in the South Caucasus.
The general believes that the escalation of tension between Iran and Israel could seriously impact the region's transportation and energy routes, including transit lines passing through Azerbaijan.
Buzhinsky told OrdoMundi.ru that the infrastructure security of the South Caucasus directly depends on the situation in the Middle East.
According to him, if the confrontation between Tehran and Jerusalem intensifies, the main logistics and energy corridors connecting the region to foreign markets could be at risk:
"If tension increases between Tehran and Jerusalem, the main logistics and energy arteries of the region may come under attack. This will make it difficult for the South Caucasus to access foreign markets."
The general added that the transit routes passing through Azerbaijan are sensitive in this regard, and the resilience of regional logistics to global geopolitical crises has not yet been fully established.
According to the expert, amid increasing tensions around Iran, forecasts regarding risks related to the South Caucasus are coming to the forefront more frequently.
"These assessments are still of a predictive nature, but they show that the security of the region is closely linked not only with neighboring countries but also with distant geopolitical processes," Buzhinsky emphasized. / "Yeni Sabah"
