Experts state that the risk of blood vessel blockage during cosmetic filler injections in the facial area is particularly dangerous. In such cases, because the blood flow is disrupted, severe complications such as skin loss, tissue death, and even blindness may occur.
According to Milli.Az, in a recent study, 100 incorrect filler interventions were analyzed using ultrasound. Scientists recommend performing an ultrasound examination before filler injection in clinics to avoid damage to arteries during the injection.
The head of the study, Dr. Rosa Sigrist from the University of São Paulo, Brazil, states that although rare, "vascular occlusion" can cause serious deformities in the patient. Injecting filler material inside or very close to blood vessels results in severe consequences such as skin death and changes in the shape of the facial area.
According to Dr. Sigrist, the area around the nose is more dangerous because the blood vessels in that area are connected to vital parts of the head. Damage to these vessels can cause skin injury, vision loss, and even stroke.
The research was conducted between 2022 and 2025 in Brazil, Colombia, Chile, the Netherlands, and the USA, and the results will be presented at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society Association.
