Scientists have determined that fingerprints are not formed to identify people, but to improve grip, sensitivity, and survival ability.
Medianews.az reports that according to research, these structures called dermal ridges form around the 10th week of pregnancy. Their pattern is more a result of the pressure and deformation processes of the tissues rather than genetics.
Fingerprints are found only in primates and koalas, which shows their important functional role.
Scientists explain the main advantages as follows:
better contact with the surface and reduced slipping;
increased touch sensitivity;
improved movement and especially the ability to grasp on trees.
Experts note that these features of fingerprints together ensure precise movement and control ability of a person. Their use for identification in the modern era is merely a side effect of these characteristics.
