It has been three years since the terrorist attack on Azerbaijan's embassy in Tehran, the capital of Iran.
On January 27, 2023, at 08:30 AM Baku time, our embassy was subjected to a terrorist attack.
The terrorist, Iranian citizen Yasin Huseynzade, broke through the security post with a Kalashnikov automatic weapon and killed the head of the security service, Orkhan Asgarov. Security service employees Vasif Tagiyev and Mahir Imanov were injured while preventing the attack.
Orkhan Asgarov was buried at the Second Martyrs' Alley. On February 3, 2023, by the decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Orkhan Rizvan oglu Asgarov (posthumously) was awarded the "For the Motherland" medal. Vasif Natiq oglu Tagiyev was awarded the 1st degree "Rashadat" order, and Mahir Kamil oglu Imanov was awarded the "For the Motherland" medal.
After the incident, the activity of Azerbaijan's embassy in Tehran was suspended. The employees of the embassy and their family members were evacuated from Tehran to Baku on January 29.
As a result of negotiations between the two states, the Azerbaijani embassy in Iran resumed its activities at a new address from July 15, 2024; the ambassador and the embassy staff returned to Iran.
The court trial of Yasin Huseynzade, who committed the terrorist act, lasted for two years. After the trial, the Iranian Ministry of Justice announced that a death sentence had been issued against him. The Supreme Court of Iran confirmed the death sentence regarding the person who attacked the embassy, and the case was sent to Tehran for the execution of the criminal rulings. He was executed on May 21, 2025.
