It has been five years since the liberation of Shusha.

Today marks five years since the liberation of Shusha from occupation.

The city was liberated from enemy occupation on November 8, 2020, by our heroic army under the leadership of the Victorious Supreme Commander of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces, President Ilham Aliyev.

Thus, the city, cleared of Armenian occupiers, was raised with the glorious tricolor flag of Azerbaijan in its center. On the same day, President Ilham Aliyev announced the liberation of Shusha city from occupation in his address to the people from the Martyrs' Alley.

The battles of Shusha are among the most successful operations in the Second Karabakh War resulting in the victory of the Azerbaijani Army. During the battles, the Azerbaijani Army took direction towards Shusha by crossing dense forests, impassable ravines, and difficult mountain passes.

On November 7, our army climbed the rocks of the city and entered Shusha with light weapons and ammunition. The Azerbaijani Army's Special Forces were divided into groups of one hundred to approach the city from several directions. During the fighting, Armenia launched "Iskander" ballistic missiles at Shusha. The target of the missile was Azerbaijani soldiers. Nevertheless, the Victorious Azerbaijani Army quickly destroyed the Armenian troops and expelled them from the city.

In May 2021, by decree of President Ilham Aliyev, the city of Shusha was declared the cultural capital of Azerbaijan.

According to the decree signed by President Ilham Aliyev on July 31, 2023, Shusha City Day is solemnly celebrated every year on November 8.

It should be recalled that Shusha city was occupied by Armenian armed forces on May 8, 1992. After the occupation, the 22,000 inhabitants of the city were forcibly displaced and settled in various regions of Azerbaijan. During the occupation of Shusha, 195 people were killed, 165 people were wounded. In addition, 55 people were captured and taken hostage.
