Thirst during Ramadan increases the risk of kidney stones – Warning from the urologist

Prolonged thirst during Ramadan increases the risk of kidney stones.

Medianews.az reports that urologist specialist, associate professor Dr. Cevper Ersöz warns about this.

He emphasized the importance of drinking at least 2-2.5 liters of water between iftar and imsak.

Associate Professor Ersöz stated that carbonated, sugary drinks and excessive tea-coffee do not replace water and may accelerate the formation of kidney stones. People who have had kidney stones or have a family history of this condition should pay special attention. Also, it is recommended to avoid very salty and high-protein foods.

It is important for those with active kidney stone disease or who have recently undergone surgery to consult a doctor before fasting. In cases of severe side pain, vomiting, blood in urine, or fever symptoms, emergency services should be called immediately. Small stones usually pass on their own, but for stones larger than 4 mm, endoscopic methods using laser energy through the urinary tract are applied for stone fragmentation.
