Attention to children's sleep hours in the winter months: Experts warn

In the winter season, the decrease in daylight and the increase in screen usage can cause disruption of the sleep pattern in children.

Medianews.az reports that specialists state that during this period, not only the duration of sleep but also the time at which the child goes to bed is crucial for healthy development.

According to research, the highest quality sleep in children begins between 21:00 and 23:00. During these hours, growth hormones are secreted more actively, and the organism enters the restoration and development process. Based on recommendations, it is advisable for preschool children to go to bed between 20:00 and 20:30, and for school-age children no later than between 21:00 and 21:30.

Specialists note that artificial lighting and the use of phones, tablets, and televisions in the evening reduce the secretion of melatonin, the sleep hormone. Studies show that even weak light before sleeping can significantly lower melatonin levels, which negatively affects sleep quality.

It is emphasized that sleep is important for children’s memory, attention, behavior, and immune system. Disruption of the sleep pattern can cause distraction, behavioral problems, and weakening of academic performance.

For healthy sleep, parents are advised to reduce lighting in the evening, stay away from screens one hour before sleeping, go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, and establish calming routines before sleeping. Specialists say it is normal for children to need to go to bed a little earlier in the winter months; the main goal is to maintain a sleep pattern consistent with the biological clock and stable.
