Danger among schoolchildren: What are the negative effects of the cigarette alternative "snus"?

In recent days, cases of the use of a chewing gum-like product called "snus" among schoolchildren have been encountered.

Among experts, there are differing opinions on whether this product should be classified as a narcotic or psychotropic substance.

Currently, investigations are being conducted regarding the composition and legal status of the aforementioned product.

It is interesting, but what exactly is this product called "snus"? For what purpose is it used?

In an explanation to Oxu.Az, Məhsəti Hüseynova, head of the Food Safety Movement and a specialist in healthy nutrition, noted that "snus" is recognized as a tobacco product and contains nicotine as well as flavorings, preservatives, and various chemical substances:

"Adolescents and young people sometimes show interest in various products that cause addiction, sometimes presented in the form of medicines or sweets. These products called 'snus,' which resemble candy, cannot officially be produced or sold in Azerbaijan. Most likely, these products are imported illegally or directly offered to adolescents and youth from unregulated points of sale.

The nicotine in "snus" is a substance that directly causes addiction. Sometimes these products are manufactured in unknown places, increasing the risk of heavy metals being present in their composition. As a result, regular use can lead to dysfunction of internal organs, poisoning, and serious health risks.

Especially when adolescents and young people use these products sublingually, under the tongue, or by sucking, negative effects on oral, palate, and dental health occur, and gum problems are observed. Along with the risk of addiction, long-term use can also lead to cardiovascular diseases. There are serious risks such as increased blood pressure, accelerated heart rate, and even sudden cardiac arrest.

Moreover, in adolescents with weakened immune systems, the use of "snus" can manifest with symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, temporary visual disturbances, and weakness.

These nicotine-containing products of unknown origin are sold in unreliable places with the purpose of creating tobacco addiction among adolescents and young people. In cases where such incidents are encountered, the hotline of the Ministry of Internal Affairs should be informed. Because these products are considered harmful and their sale and use by minors are prohibited.

Although control measures are carried out, such cases still occur in secret and uncontrolled places. For this reason, parents, educational institutions, and relevant authorities should pay special attention to the issue."

Professor Adil Qeybulla, in an explanation to Oxu.Az, stated that long-term use of "snus" increases the risk of cancer:

"Snus is considered a tobacco product and contains nicotine. When used frequently, it can create sores in the oral cavity and even increase the risk of cancer. With long-term use, due to the effects of tar-like substances in tobacco—polycyclic aromatic compounds and carbon-nitrates—cancer and various oral diseases may develop."

According to him, the use of "snus" especially among children causes serious concern:

"The sale of products banned for children’s use at points of sale around schools is unacceptable. This includes energy drinks and products resembling 'snus.' In this matter, parents should educate their children and help them avoid habits that threaten their health.

In some types of 'snus,' the nicotine content exceeds the norm, which is especially dangerous for a child's body. The routes by which these products enter the country must be investigated thoroughly. Although 'snus' is actually presented as an alternative to smoking cigarettes, it cannot be considered a successful and safe option for this purpose."
