Why do eyes get red?

Eye redness occurs as a result of the dilation or irritation of tiny blood vessels located in the white part of the eye (sclera). This condition can stem from simple fatigue or from serious eye diseases that require medical intervention.

Main Causes

Eye Fatigue and Insomnia: Prolonged exposure to computer or phone screens and sleeping less at night strain the vessels, causing redness.

Allergies: Pollen, dust, and animal hair cause redness along with intense itching and tearing of the eyes.

Conjunctivitis (Eye Inflammation): It arises due to bacterial, viral, or allergic infections; it is accompanied by redness, discharge, and swelling of the eye.

Dry Eye Syndrome: Insufficient tear production or loss of moisture due to dry, windy conditions causes burning and redness.

Contact Lenses: Failure to remove lenses for a long time, not keeping them clean, or irritation caused by the lenses.

External Factors and Injuries: Exposure to dust, sand, soap, chemicals falling into the eyes or direct exposure to sunlight.

High Eye Pressure (Glaucoma): Sudden increase in pressure can press on the eye vessels, causing severe redness and headache.

What should be done in such cases?

Rest: Every 20 minutes in front of the screen, rest your eyes by looking at a distant point.
Artificial tears: Use moisturizing drops with doctor's advice to reduce dryness and irritation.
Apply compress: Place a cold or warm compress on the eyelids with clean cotton to reduce inflammation and tension.
Follow lens regimen: Remove lenses on time and clean them with special solution.

When to see a doctor?

If there is severe pain along with redness, blurred vision, sensitivity to light, or heavy discharge, it is necessary to consult an ophthalmologist (eye doctor) without delay.Demokrat.az
