World Championships: from 13 to 48, now to 64

The 2030 World Cup may be held with the participation of 64 national teams. According to the initial plan, the teams will be divided into 16 groups of 4 teams each, and the top two in the groups will qualify for the round of 16.

Some matches of the championship, hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco, are planned to be held in Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina.

Medianews.az reports that the 2026 World Cup to be held in the USA, Canada and Mexico will feature 48 teams, divided into 12 groups of 4 teams, with the top two in the groups and the best 8 teams among the third-placed teams advancing to the round of 16.

The International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) has been organizing World Cups since 1930.

In the 1930 and 1950 championships, 13 national teams participated, and in the 1938 championship, there were 15 teams.

The 1934 championship had 16 teams, and the same number has been applied since 1954.

Since 1982, the World Cups have been held with the participation of 24 teams, and since 1998 with 32 teams.

Uruguay was the world champion in 1930 and 1950, Italy in 1934, 1938, 1982 and 2006, Germany (West Germany) in 1954, 1974, 1990 and 2014, Brazil in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994 and 2002, England in 1966, Argentina in 1978, 1986 and 2022, France in 1998 and 2018, and Spain in 2010.
