Washing agents (detergents) confused with the thought of "cleaning better" can unknowingly turn into toxic gases. Especially, the combined use of bleaching (bleach) and acid-based products can even cause permanent damage to the lungs.
Demokrat.az reports that according to Prof. Dr. Asım Kalkan, when bleach is mixed with an acidic substance, chlorine gas is produced. Chlorine is incredibly toxic and was used to poison people during the First World War. When bleach is mixed with ammonia-based cleaning agents, a gas called chloramine is produced, both of which are very dangerous for the respiratory system.
What are the symptoms of poisoning?
Poisoning can occur not only through the respiratory tract but also through the skin. The main symptoms are:
Burning in the eyes: Because the outer layer of the eye is very thin, this is the first symptom felt.
Burning in the throat and cough: Caused by damage to the mucous membrane in the throat.
Headache and nausea: Especially chloramine gas causes these complaints. If these symptoms are present, the situation is very serious.
Permanent damage and risk groups
Chronic lung patients, heart patients, and the elderly are more severely affected by these gases. It may even trigger a heart attack in these individuals. Sometimes this poisoning can cause:
Adhesions in lung tissue,
The onset of asthma disease that was not previously present,
Respiratory failure.
First Aid: What to do?
Go to fresh air: The first and most important step is to leave the environment immediately and call emergency services (112).
Rinse eyes: If there is burning in the eyes, they should be washed with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes (to prevent corneal damage).
Change clothes: Volatile gases penetrate clothes, so they should be removed.
Do not eat yogurt: The popular belief "eating yogurt is good in poisoning" is wrong. It has no scientific basis and can even be harmful in some cases.
Remember: Mixing cleaning agents does not clean your home, it can "clean" your lungs and destroy them.
