A complete ban will be imposed on the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia to the European Union starting from the beginning of 2027. Gas supply from Russia via pipeline will also be banned from 30 September 2027.
According to a statement issued today by the Council of the European Union, by 1 March 2026, member states must prepare plans to diversify gas imports and identify potential problems in replacing supplies from Russia.
The European Commission plans to present a regulation to gradually stop Russian oil imports by the end of 2027.
European Union countries must verify the origin of imported gas.
The penalties for violating the ban are as follows:
* For individuals, the maximum fine will be at least 2.5 million euros;
* For companies, it should not be less than 40 million euros or 3.5% of total annual turnover, or 300% of the expected turnover for the operation.
