SENSATIONAL TURN in Iran-Armenia relations - Tehran took action

"What Iran's ambassador to Yerevan, Khalil Shirgholami, said at the press conference can be considered a turning point in Iran-Armenia relations." Political analyst Elkhan Shahinoglu said this in an interview with Medianews.az.

He stated that Armenia has had close relations with Iran since it gained independence and that these two states had no grievances against each other: "However, Armenia's Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's expansion of partnership with the enemy of the Iranian regime, the United States, in various fields, and additionally signing the construction of the 'Trump Road' on its territory, has prompted Tehran to take action. The statement by the Iranian ambassador that 'Armenia is increasingly turning into the center of activity of forces hostile towards Iran' reflects the current situation in bilateral relations."

It is clear that the ambassador harshly criticized the Armenian government's policy based on instructions from the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The support by Iranians living in Yerevan for the protests in their country caused dissatisfaction for the ambassador. What also displeased the ambassador was the Armenian police facilitating protests in front of the embassy. With the phrase "Tehran has always extended a helping hand to Yerevan at the most difficult moments," the Iranian diplomat wanted to say that Yerevan has turned its back on Tehran. The ambassador's last sentence can also be read as: "You have forgotten the support we gave you in the occupation of Azerbaijani lands."

Nikol Pashinyan is aware that sooner or later the regime in Iran will change. Therefore, rather than partnering with that cruel regime, he prioritizes close partnership with the world's superpower, the United States. This is also a good lesson to the Iranian regime, which supports Armenia's occupying policy against Azerbaijan."
