6 of Iran's 31 provinces are South Azerbaijan - LIST

Medianews.az has taken a look at the administrative-territorial structure of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Iran, with an area exceeding 1.6 million square kilometers, is divided into 31 provinces (ostan).

Six provinces cover the historical lands of South Azerbaijan: East Azerbaijan province (center – Tabriz city), West Azerbaijan province (center – Urmia city), Ardabil province (center – Ardabil city), Zanjan province (center – Zanjan city), Qazvin province (center – Qazvin city), Hamadan province (center – Hamadan city).

The second largest administrative territorial units are considered cities.

Cities are divided into districts, and districts combine village councils.

The Islamic Republic of Iran was established in 1979 amid the wave of revolution. The supreme leader, holding the powers of the head of state, is appointed by the Assembly of Experts. Since June 3, 1989, this post has been held by Ali Khamenei, born in 1939.

The Iranian president, who serves as the head of government, is elected by popular vote for a term of 4 years. Since July 28, 2024, the president has been Masoud Pezeshkian, born in 1954.

The 290-member national parliament (Islamic Consultative Assembly) is elected every 4 years through a majoritarian system (by constituencies). The current parliament was formed in spring 2024.
