The president of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation, Yasir Al-Mishal, resigned after the national team's unsuccessful performance in the 2026 World Cup.
Medianews.az reports that he shared this information on his "X" social media account.
The Saudi Arabian team drew with Uruguay (1:1) and Cape Verde (0:0), and lost to Spain (0:4), finishing last in the group.
"My colleagues and I did our best to serve Saudi football, and sincerely strived to meet the hopes of our homeland and fans. However, the national team's failure to advance to the next stage of the World Cup is a result inconsistent with our overall goals. Therefore, I take full responsibility and apologize to everyone who wants to see our team in a better position. I have decided not to continue my work until the end of my current term. In accordance with accepted rules and regulations, we will start the process of nominating candidates for the election of the new board of directors," Al-Mishal stated.
It should be noted that Al-Mishal had been leading the federation since 2019./oxu.az
