The clockwise movement of the hands on a clock in our daily lives seems completely natural to us. We are so accustomed to it that we hardly ever think about why it is so. However, this direction has neither a serious physical nor mathematical justification. The root of the matter goes back millennia, to ancient Egypt and the periods when people observed the movement of the Sun.
The history starting from sundials

They were used around 1500 BC in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. In the Northern Hemisphere, the Sun rises in the east in the morning, reaches its highest point in the south at noon, and sets in the west in the evening.
During this process, the shadow of the vertical rod moves from left to right throughout the day. In the morning hours, the shadow is long and directed toward the west, that is, to the left side. At noon, it is at its shortest and points north. Toward the evening, it shifts toward the east, to the right side.
In ancient times, craftsmen observed this movement and fixed it on a surface. Thus, on the clock face, morning was placed on the left side and evening on the right side. The mechanical clocks created in the Middle Ages also replicated this model.
Why didn’t clocks run backwards?
From a technical standpoint, it is very easy to create a mechanism that moves the hands of a clock from right to left. Such examples do exist. For instance, some turret clocks in the German city of Münster and the famous "Jewish clock" in Prague.
Nevertheless, tradition prevailed. By the 16th century, when clocks began to spread widely, left-to-right movement had already become part of people’s mindset. This direction was accepted as "the natural flow of time," and the opposite direction caused a sense of oddity among people.
This principle lives on in the modern world as well
Interestingly, this ancient model also appears in today’s technology. Loading bars on computer and phone interfaces, video progress bars, and other visual elements also move from left to right. UX designers call this the natural direction of time. The opposite direction creates a feeling of error or backwardness in users.
Are there exceptions?
Yes, there are some exceptions. In countries where languages that are written from right to left are used, sometimes clocks moving in the opposite direction are encountered. However, due to global standardization, the most widespread model remains the clock moving from left to right.
Even at the South Pole, people use standard clocks, despite the fact that the movement of the Sun there is different. This shows that human habits sometimes have a stronger influence than natural laws.
Thus, the reason clock hands move from left to right is not physical laws, but a tradition created by ancient people observing the Sun’s shadow. This tradition has been preserved for millennia and has become an integral part of our lives today.
