The rarest metal in the world is considered to be californium, which is artificially created. Among natural metals, osmium is considered the rarest metal.

Publika.az reports that this was stated by Yevgeni Vishnevski, an expert of the National Technology Initiative on New Materials and Technologies.

According to him, if all metals, including those synthesized by human hands, are taken into account, californium definitely holds the record in terms of rarity:

“However, among the natural and stable metals that can be extracted from the depths of the earth, osmium remains the rarest metal.”

Regarding rare natural metal, Vishnevski said that osmium is obtained in South Africa, Russia, the USA, Canada, and Kazakhstan. Its amount in the earth's crust is extremely low – approximately 0.001 parts per million. Therefore, even in one ton of rock, the amount of this metal is less than the mass of a grain of sand.

He emphasized that the price of osmium can vary from 1,500 dollars to 10,000 dollars (17 thousand manats) per gram, depending on its purity and isotope. The metal and its alloys are used as components for jet engines, spacecraft, as well as for high-precision surgical instruments.
