The president gave the prime minister 15 days.

The path for a new cabinet in Lithuania has been opened.

Medianews.az reports that on June 30, President Gitanas Nauseda, with the approval of the parliament, appointed Mindaugas Sinkevičius as prime minister, giving him 15 days to form a government.

Born in 1984, Mindaugas Sinkevičius is the leader of the Social Democratic Party. He served as Minister of Economy and Innovation from 2016 to 2017.

According to the constitution, the Lithuanian government is formed based on the results of the parliamentary elections, which consist of 141 seats. In the parliamentary elections held in October 2024, the winning Social Democratic Party entered a coalition with the Nemunas Dawn Party and the Union of Democrats for Lithuania, and in December Gintautas Paluckas took the prime minister's chair.

Due to his involvement in corruption scandals, Gintautas Paluckas resigned in July 2025 and also stepped down from the leadership of the Social Democratic Party; in September, a new cabinet was formed under Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė.

On June 6, 2026, the Nemunas Dawn Party was removed from the coalition, creating the necessity for another government renewal. On June 18, the Social Democratic Party, the Union of Democrats for Lithuania, and the Union of Farmers and Greens signed a coalition agreement. On June 23, Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė's resignation was formalized, and the government change process began.
