At a graduation ceremony held in Canada, a teacher removing the kufiya (a black-and-white checkered headscarf symbolizing the Palestinian struggle for freedom) from the neck of a Palestinian student caused widespread dissatisfaction on social media.
Medianews.az reports that at the graduation ceremony, the Palestinian student went on stage to receive their diploma wearing an academic gown and a kufiya around their neck.
In footage circulating on social media, the teacher on stage is seen suddenly grabbing and removing the kufiya from the student's neck. Although the student was surprised, the ceremony continued.
After the footage of the incident was shared, many social media users criticized the teacher's behavior. They stated that the kufiya is a symbol of cultural identity and solidarity for many Palestinians. Interfering with it in such a manner is unacceptable.
It should be noted that following the Israel-Gaza war, similar disputes have arisen at many universities around the world concerning the use of the kufiya and actions supporting Palestine. While some educational institutions consider the kufiya a political symbol, students and human rights defenders argue that it is also an expression of cultural identity.
The educational institution has not yet made an official statement regarding the incident.
