Oxford scholars Vitamin D protects against the flu

According to a new study by scientists, adequate levels of vitamin D in the body help protect against flu and other respiratory infections.

AZERTAC reports, citing "The Telegraph," that individuals with severe vitamin D deficiency have a 33 percent higher risk of being hospitalized due to respiratory infections compared to those with normal vitamin D levels.

The study was conducted by scientists from Surrey, Oxford, and Reading Universities. Within the framework of the research, data from 36,000 adults living in the United Kingdom were analyzed to investigate the relationship between vitamin D levels in the body and hospitalizations due to respiratory infections.

Experts state that vitamin D plays an important role in regulating calcium and phosphorus levels. This is essential for bone and muscle health. At the same time, it is assumed that the vitamin may have antiviral properties.

It should be noted that in the United Kingdom, due to the lack of sunlight during winter months, vitamin D deficiency is more commonly observed. For this reason, healthcare workers recommend vitamin D supplementation for everyone during the winter season.

The study included viral and bacterial illnesses such as flu, pneumonia, and bronchitis.
