In a large part of the USA, heavy snowfall and severe cold are forecasted in the coming days.
“Qafqazinfo” reports that the US National Weather Service (NWS) has issued warnings that more than half of the country will be under the influence of "freezing temperatures".
In the official statement, it was noted that a "devastating ice storm" is expected over a vast area stretching from eastern Texas to the southern regions. The snowy and stormy weather, described as "historic," is expected to progress from the center of the country towards the east, causing widespread icing and dangerous cold.
According to forecasts, snow thickness may reach approximately 30 centimeters in the northern regions of the country. Snowfall is also expected in southern states including Texas and Virginia. Experts state that by Sunday, about 172 million people could be affected by this adverse weather condition.
Based on weather forecasts, temperatures in some regions may drop as low as -45 degrees. It is noted that strong winds could lead to widespread icing, prolonged power outages, and hazardous travel conditions. Officials particularly urge residents in areas where the storm and snow are intense to exercise caution.
Despite calls from authorities to stay at home, many Americans have flocked to shopping centers. Especially in supermarkets around New York and New Jersey, essential food items such as water, bread, and pasta have rapidly run out.
Due to the weather conditions, a state of emergency has been declared in more than 10 states, and schools have been closed. Large supermarket chains have announced that they have taken additional measures to prevent shortages of not only food but also essential items such as batteries and blankets.
Meanwhile, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) stated that emergency operations centers have been established at John F. Kennedy, Newark Liberty, and LaGuardia International Airports due to the snowstorm. Passengers are advised to regularly check their flight status for possible cancellations.
