The balance of power in the USA

From January 20, 2025, Donald Trump will hold the presidential post in the USA, and James David (J.D.) Vance will hold the vice-presidential post. They are members of the Republican Party.

Medianews.az reports that the Republicans also hold a dominant position in the parliament – Congress.

The 435-member lower chamber – the House of Representatives – currently has 432 members: 219 congressmen represent the Republicans, 213 congressmen represent the Democrats.

In the 100-member upper chamber – the Senate – Republicans are represented by 53 senators, and Democrats by 47 senators.

Elections are held every two years for the entire House of Representatives and for one-third of the Senate.

The USA consists of 50 states and 1 federal district; the District of Columbia, where the capital Washington is located, has no representation in Congress.

Representation of states in the House of Representatives depends on population. The speaker of this body is considered the third highest official after the president and vice president. Currently, Republican Mike Johnson is the speaker.

Two people are elected to the Senate from each state. The vice president is considered the president of the Senate, but can vote only in cases where votes are equally divided.

Republicans govern in 27 states, Democrats govern in 23 states.
