Election in Kyrgyzstan: What worries the Kremlin-linked media?

By-election for the parliament will be held in Kyrgyzstan on November 30. There are 530 candidates for the 90-seat parliament.

According to political analyst Elkhan Shahinoglu's statement to Medianews.az, Kremlin-linked media highlights several points regarding these elections: “First, they write that nationalist slogans are increasing in Kyrgyzstan and that the Russian-speaking population is not represented among the candidates for parliament. The Kremlin still does not give up the habit of dividing the populations of neighboring countries into various ‘parts.’ What does ‘Russian-speaking population’ mean? Everyone living in Kyrgyzstan and a citizen of this country should know the Kyrgyz language. In 2023, the Kyrgyz parliament adopted the ‘Law on the State Language of the Kyrgyz Republic.’ According to this law, the use of the Kyrgyz language is mandatory. President Sadyr Japarov has a firm position on this issue: ‘It is not correct to carry out documents in Russian when the Kyrgyz language exists.’

Nevertheless, Kremlin-linked media does not abandon the theses of ‘Russian language’ and ‘Russian-speaking population’ in neighboring countries.”

The political analyst emphasized that another point that worries the Kremlin-linked media about Kyrgyzstan is this country's expansion of relations with China: “Now supposedly Russia and China are strategic partners. In reality, the Kremlin watches with concern the strengthening of China’s positions in Central Asian countries, but is powerless to prevent it.”
