Drinking milk is not a beneficial remedy for heartburn and gastritis treatment.
Medianews.az, citing Medicina.az, reports that sports doctor Aleksandra Chistyakova spoke about a common belief among the public.
She noted that there is a widespread belief that drinking milk reduces stomach pain because it neutralizes stomach acid, which irritates and damages the mucous membranes:
"Drinking milk can only relieve stomach pain for a few hours. Milk is a product with lower acidity than stomach juice. For this reason, it has long been believed that drinking milk neutralizes stomach acid. However, scientists have discovered that the acid-neutralizing effect of milk is temporary. The layer of milk on the stomach walls delays the effect of the acid, but studies show that milk also stimulates the secretion of gastric juice."
Therefore, the doctor added that although milk provides relief, the stomach pain will return after a while.
