"Homemade alcohol can result in blindness and death."
Milli.Az reports that gastroenterologist Vladimir Neronov explained that homemade alcoholic beverages, especially moonshine, pose serious dangers due to methanol.
"Homemade drinks may contain substances far more harmful than ethyl alcohol, such as methanol, carcinogens, fusel oils, and heavy metals. Methanol is converted in the body into formaldehyde and formic acid, damaging the nervous system and eye cells."
The doctor warned that 10 ml of methanol can cause blindness, while 30 ml or more can lead to death. Although symptoms of poisoning initially resemble intoxication, serious damage to the brain, optic nerves, liver, and kidneys begins 12-24 hours later.
"In cases of headache, nausea, visual disturbances, vomiting, cyanosis, breathing difficulties, and loss of consciousness, emergency medical assistance should be called immediately," the doctor said.
