Why did the Kyrgyzstan parliament dissolve itself?

On September 25, the Kyrgyzstan parliament dissolved itself. The decision is related to the intention to go to early elections on November 30. The 5-year term of the parliament was supposed to end in November 2026.

Medianews.az reports that out of the 90-member parliament, 54 deputies were elected through the proportional system (party lists), and 36 deputies were elected through the majoritarian system (from constituencies). The revised election law envisages the abolition of the proportional system and the election of 3 deputies from each of the 30 constituencies.

Kyrgyzstan switched to a presidential system of governance in 2021, with the president serving as both the head of state and the head of government.

Previously, Kyrgyzstan was a parliamentary republic, where the government, as the highest executive body, was formed by the political force that had more than half of the deputies in parliament. After Sadyr Japarov was elected president on January 10, 2021, a process of renewal of governance began in the country. His 5-year term expires on January 28, 2026. The dissolution of parliament arose from the desire to renew the deputy corps before the presidential election.
