The severe G3-class geomagnetic storm, announced by experts days ago, has now gripped our planet.
This was reported by the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute (SRI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
According to the information, the magnetic storm began with a delay of one day compared to initial calculations. In terms of strength, this is the third such event recorded this year and, only behind the G4.67-class storm that occurred from January 19-21, stands at the same level as the process on March 21. However, the current disturbance is shorter in duration compared to previous ones.
Researchers noted that the protective magnetic field of our planet was able to resist the solar plasma ejections for about 24 hours. Although the initial impact wave reached Earth at 15:00 Baku time yesterday, the geomagnetic field could not withstand the increasing pressure in the subsequent phase.
The laboratory additionally noted that it does not seem credible that the current magnetic storm would surpass the event in January.
Experts also pointed out that, despite the observation of large sunspot groups currently on the Sun’s surface, these formations have not yet caused strong eruptions./oxu.az
