A significant decrease is observed in the number of large and small horned animals in Azerbaijan. According to statistical indicators, compared to 2025, the number of large horned cattle has decreased by 0.9%. When looking at the dynamics of the last 10 years, a decrease of 20-25% in the number of small horned animals and 7-8% in large horned animals has been recorded.
Medianews.az reports that this was stated in a video material by Baku TV.
Experts and farm owners indicate that there are several main reasons for this decrease:
- Reduction of feed base and pasture areas: The decrease in natural pasture areas and the inability to meet the demand for quality feed put farmers in a difficult position.
- Increase in feed prices: The rise in the price of barley and hay makes the feed ration more expensive.
- Poor quality additives in feed: Farmers sometimes report that stone dust and other additives are added to feed, which causes the death of animals.
- Early slaughter: Sending animals for slaughter before fully growing, especially during the period suitable for breeding, leads to a decrease in the herd in the future.
Economist Khalid Kerimli noted that a decrease in the number of cattle, at a time when the demand for meat has increased by about 25%, inevitably causes a price increase.
Member of the National Assembly Aydin Huseynov stated that it is important to protect breeding animals, increase support for farmers, and strengthen control at slaughter points. According to him, slaughtering animals at an early age and with low weight should be prevented.
