Today is Victory Day in Azerbaijan

Today marks the fifth anniversary of Azerbaijan's historic Victory in the Second Karabakh War - Victory Day.

Victory Day was established by the decree signed by the Victorious Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, President Ilham Aliyev, on December 3, 2020.

In response to Armenia's provocation and the next military aggression, on September 27, 2020, the Azerbaijani Army launched the Patriotic War to liberate our lands from occupation, force Armenia to peace, fulfill the demands of the UN Security Council resolutions, enable internally displaced persons to return to their native lands, and restore justice. The entire Azerbaijani people mobilized and united for this sacred cause.

During the 44 days of fighting, the valiant Azerbaijani Army liberated 5 cities, 4 settlements, and 286 villages from occupation. Specifically, Jabrayil city and 90 villages of the district, Fuzuli city and 53 villages of the district, Zangilan city, the settlements of Minjivan, Aghbend, Bartaz of the district, and 52 villages, the Hadrut settlement and 35 villages of Khojavend district, 3 villages of Tartar district, Gubadli city and 41 villages of the district, 9 villages of Khojaly district, Shusha city, 3 villages of Lachin district, as well as several strategic heights in the directions of Aghdere and Murovdag, and in Zangilan the heights of Bartaz, Sighirt, Shukurataz and 5 other unnamed heights were cleared of the enemy.

The military victories Azerbaijan achieved, especially the liberation of Shusha from enemy captivity, played a decisive role in the fate of the war, resulting in Armenia’s recognition of its defeat through capitulation, forcing Armenia to return the districts of Kalbajar, Aghdam, and Lachin to Azerbaijan.

On the night of November 9 to 10, 2020, a trilateral statement on the complete cessation of fire and all military operations in the conflict zone was signed between the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, the Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan, and the President of Russia Vladimir Putin. Thus, the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict was ended.

Congratulations on the victory, Azerbaijan!
