“Russian President Vladimir Putin’s handshake and meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev at the ceremonial event in Beijing related to the 80th anniversary of the Chinese people's resistance against the Japanese invasion and victory in World War II, as well as greeting our country's First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva, was both a coincidental and a casual occurrence. Such coincidental and casual meetings should not be expected to yield significant results.” These remarks were emphasized by political expert Mahammad Asadullazade in his statement to Medianews.az.

The expert stated that for the normalization of Russia-Azerbaijan relations, the Kremlin must first comply with the demands put forward by Baku in connection with the shooting down of the AZAL plane: “Naturally, Azerbaijan is not interested in escalating tensions with Russia. Azerbaijan and Russia are neighboring countries, and cooperation between the parties in many fields has been at a high level. However, Russia does not accept Azerbaijan’s independent policy and views the new geopolitical order in the South Caucasus with concern.
The statement by the spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, to remain silent on the incident of the AZAL plane being shot down and instead demand the release of several Russians jailed in Baku contradicts political ethics.
Fundamental problems between Azerbaijan and Russia have been created by Russia itself. Moscow must take serious steps to eliminate these. As it appears, Russia’s anti-Azerbaijani policy has turned against itself. Although Putin admitted the political crisis during the press conference in China, he has not yet taken concrete actions.”
Mahammad Asadullazade noted that Azerbaijan has created irreversible new geopolitical realities in the South Caucasus: “The European Union, the United States, and China support Azerbaijan. In such a case, Russia’s pressures on Azerbaijan will yield no results.”
