In recent days, news has been circulating on social networks that polygamy is allowed in Azerbaijan, and there are extensive discussions about this news.
Is polygamy really permitted in our country? Has there been any change in the legislation allowing men to enter into two or more marriages? Or are the discussions on social media based on fake news?
Speaking to Medianews.az on the topic, lawyer Əkrəm Həsənov said that no changes have been made in the legislation regarding this: “There is no permission for a second official marriage in Azerbaijani legislation, and this applies to both men and women. No changes granting any additional rights to men in this matter have been made to the legislation. A second spouse is only possible through an unofficial marriage.”
