The Central Election Commission of Georgia has released a preliminary statement regarding the local elections held on October 4.
According to the official report, the ruling Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia Party has secured the mayoral post in each of the 64 cities and also gained the majority in the councils.
Medianews.az reports that to be elected mayor, it is required to obtain more than half of the valid votes. A mixed system is applied in council elections. Parties must pass the 4 percent threshold under the proportional system, and candidates must win a relative majority under the majoritarian system.
In Georgia, the government is formed by the party that has at least 76 mandates in the 150-seat parliament. Georgian Dream has won the parliamentary elections in 2012, 2016, 2020, and 2024.
In the country, the president is elected by the Electoral College, which consists of members of parliament, the highest representative bodies of autonomous entities, and representatives of local self-government bodies. The post of president is held by Mikheil Kavlashvili, affiliated with Georgian Dream.
