Russia: Colonel General was discharged from military service

Russian army officer, Colonel General Aleksandr Lapin has been relieved from military service.

Medianews.az reports that Aleksandr Lapin was the chief of staff of Russia's military contingent in Syria for a period until the war in Ukraine began. When the total war started in Ukraine in 2022, he was the commander of the Central Military District troops of the Russian Ministry of Defense. Aleksandr Lapin, who was sharply criticized for Russia's failures on the front, was removed from his post as commander of the Central Military District troops in November 2022. Shortly after – in January 2023 – he was appointed chief of staff of the Russian Ground Forces. Since March 2024, he commanded the Leningrad Military District. He lost this position in August 2025.

According to Russian media, Aleksandr Lapin, now relieved from military service, will work as an assistant to the head of the Republic of Tatarstan, mainly dealing with addressing veterans' social problems and the recruitment of youth for the war in Ukraine.

Aleksandr Lapin was born in 1964 in Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan.
