How does FIFA compile the ranking of national teams? – EXPLANATION

How does the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) compile the rankings of national teams?

Medianews.az reports that the ranking is based on results obtained by taking into account the importance of the matches and the position of the opponents before the game. The coefficient for an official friendly match is at least 5, at most 10; for a game in an international tournament, the minimum coefficient is 15 and the maximum coefficient is 60.

A victory in regular and extra time is worth 1 point; a victory in a penalty shootout is worth 0.75 points, and a defeat in that shootout is 0.5 points.

In the current ranking, the Azerbaijan national team is in 123rd place among 210 national teams.

Iran is 21st, Turkey 26th, Ukraine 27th, Russia 30th, Uzbekistan 55th, Georgia 70th, Tajikistan 102nd, Belarus 103rd, Armenia 104th, Kyrgyzstan 105th, Kazakhstan 115th, Estonia 130th, Latvia 139th, Turkmenistan 142nd, Lithuania 146th, Moldova 156th.

The Azerbaijan national team, which has participated in international tournaments since 1994, has been eliminated in the qualifying rounds of 8 European Championships, 7 World Championships, and in the group stage of 4 Nations League tournaments.

Since September 30, 2025, Ayhan Abbasov is the interim head coach of the national team.

Including interim head coaches, since 1992 the Azerbaijan national team has been led by Alekber Mammadov, Agaselim Mirjavadov, Kazbek Tuayev, Vagif Sadiqov, Ahmad Alasgarov, Igor Ponomaryov, Asgar Abdullayev, Carlos Alberto Torres, Shahin Diniyev, Gyoko Haciyevski, Nazim Suleymanov, Berti Vogts, Mahmud Gurbanov, Robert Prosinečki, Qurban Qurbanov, Nikola Yurčević, Gianni De Biasi, Arif Asadov, Fernandu Santush.
