On the night of August 27, an earthquake occurred in the Republic of Dagestan of the Russian Federation. According to the information released that night by the Republican Seismological Service Center under the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 was recorded 94 kilometers north of the Qusar station. The earthquake was felt in the districts of Quba, Khinalug, Qusar, Siyazan, Khudat, Shabran, Khachmaz, Khizi, as well as in Sumgait, the Absheron peninsula, and other areas.
Currently, is the Republican Seismological Service Center observing any seismological activity either in our country or in neighboring territories? What is the extent of seismological activity following the earthquake that occurred in Dagestan on the night of August 27?
The Medianews.az website addressed these questions to Vusala Rafiggizi, head of the electronic services department of the Center.

Responding to the website’s inquiry, V. Rafiggizi said: “Since the earthquake that occurred in the territory of Dagestan was a deep earthquake, it was also felt with a magnitude of 4-3 in our territories. Usually, earthquakes with a magnitude of 5 and above and a focal depth of 50-60 kilometers have a large impact area and are felt over a wider territory. The earthquake that happened this night was such an earthquake. It was felt in our areas.
Because our own territory is an active zone, seismic shocks with a magnitude of 3 and above are also recorded from time to time in our seismic zones, which is a normal situation for seismic zones. The earthquake that occurred on the night of August 27 was only felt in some of our regions. Up to this hour, no earthquake with a magnitude of 3 or greater has been recorded in our territory.”
V. Rafiggizi also recalled in her statement that there is no exact prediction for earthquakes: “No one can predict whether an earthquake will occur or not.”
