A NEW DECISION WILL BE MADE REGARDING THE SPECIAL QUARANTINE REGIME IN AZERBAIJAN

The Cabinet of Ministers will make its next decision regarding the special quarantine regime in the coming days.

Medianews.az reminds that on March 31, 2020, a special quarantine regime was introduced in Azerbaijan due to the coronavirus infection. The regime, which has been in effect since then, restricts entry and exit to the country – the land borders are closed.

The last time the Cabinet of Ministers made a decision regarding the special quarantine regime was on June 24, 2025, when the regime was extended until October 1. Now, before October 1, the government must reconsider this decision, either to keep the regime in force, to ease it, or to cancel it.

Speaking at an international forum held in Baku on April 23, 2024, President Ilham Aliyev stated that the decision to keep the land borders closed is not based solely on the coronavirus: "The closure of the borders has strengthened security in Azerbaijan. As a person who deals daily with presidential and national security issues, I can say that after we closed our borders, we observed very significant benefits for our national security, and this is a fact. We understand that there is concern for the people in Azerbaijan, as well as for Azerbaijanis and other ethnic groups living in our neighborhood, but national security must be prioritized over all other feelings or reasons."

The new coronavirus infection, which emerged in China in December 2019 and spread worldwide, was first recorded in Azerbaijan on February 28, 2020. According to the latest report released in March 2024, 835,144 people have been infected with coronavirus in the country, of whom 10,428 have died.
