Researchers at Oxford University have discovered that people using weight loss drugs (semaglutide and tirzepatide) gain weight back four times faster after stopping the injections compared to those who diet.
According to Milli.Az, the study shows that weight lost during drug treatment returns approximately 20 months after discontinuation. Specifically, users of Wegovy and Mounjaro lose an average of 15 kilograms during treatment, but regain 10 kilograms within a year. The rate of weight gain accelerates up to 0.8 kilograms per month.
The researchers emphasize that obesity is a chronic and recurrent disease, and appetite control weakens following the discontinuation of weight loss drugs, speeding up weight gain. Long-term programs accompanied by healthy nutrition and physical activity allow for better maintenance of weight over a longer period.
Dr. Susan Webb stated that continuous treatment is important to maintain benefits and that a lifelong approach may be needed for obesity.
The study indicates that 1.6 million adults in the UK use GLP-1 drugs, and in the USA, one in every eight adults uses these drugs at some point in their lives.
