In Cyprus, the victory in the second round of the presidential elections, according to preliminary data of the vote count, was won by the country’s former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Christodoulidis, APA reports citing Perild.
He was ahead of the diplomat Andreas Mavroyannis by a small margin. Mavroyiannis has already admitted his defeat, without waiting for the official results.
According to an exit poll conducted by local broadcaster CyBC, Christodoulidis won between 50.5% and 50.5% of the vote. The vote count showed that he won about 52%, his opponent – 48%.
Both candidates ran as independents. In the first round, the representative of the ruling party, Averof Neofitou, remained in third place.
In the second round, 49-year-old Christodoulidis was supported by right-wing and center-right parties, while his opponent was supported by left-wing forces. Both candidates before the elections declared the need to maintain national unity.
Christodoulidis will succeed current President Nicos Anastasiades, who has served two five-year terms as head of state.
