Russian Embassy in the United States revealed on Saturday that Moscow urged Washington to conduct cooperation in the field of arms control “on an equal basis, taking into account mutual concerns and interests,” as the two parties work to resume inspections under the New Strategic Offensive Arms Treaty (START), APA reports citing Teletrader.
“The inspection activities under the New START Treaty have indeed been suspended since early 2020 by mutual agreement due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” the Russian Embassy underlined, adding that the remaining time to reach a deal is “extremely short” given that the treaty will expire in three and a half years.
Previously, Head of the Tenth Review Conference for the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Gustavo Zlauvinen stated that due to a lack of communication among top officials, Moscow and Washington may end up without the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) in 2026.
