Elections to the UN Human Rights Committee for 2023-2026 were held on June 17, 2022 in New York within the framework of the 39th meeting of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the Foreign Ministry told APA.
Candidates from 17 countries, including Deputy Minister of Digital Development and Transport Farid Ahmadov, competed for 9 vacancies in the Committee.
In the voting attended by 173 countries, the Azerbaijani candidate was elected a member of the Committee with 94 votes.
It should be noted that the UN Human Rights Committee, established in 1993, monitors the implementation of the provisions of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights by the states and is one of the main international mechanisms for the protection of human rights at the global level.
For the first time, an Azerbaijani representative is elected to the 18-member Committee.
