Biological sciences is the study of life and living organisms, their life cycles, adaptations and environment. Physiology is the study of the mechanical, physical, and biochemical processes of living organisms function as a whole. Cell Theory: There are three parts to cell theory — the cell is the basic unit of life, all living things are composed of cells, and all cells arise from pre-existing cells. In addition to subject-specific skills, biology graduates develop valuable transferable skills such as data analysis, communication, teamwork and time management.
Fundamentals of cellular biology, genetics and molecular biology are addressed. The Human Genome Project was the first step in a globalized effort to incorporate accumulated knowledge of biology into a functional, molecular definition of the human body and the bodies of other organisms. The similarities and differences between cell types are particularly relevant to molecular biology. The Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology prepares students for graduate and professional schools as well as a variety of careers within the life sciences.
The data on the right relates to the three-year BA in Biological Sciences. The American Journal of Human Biology is cascaded with the sound science open access journal Molecular Genetics & Genomic Medicine. Being broad – based and multi- disciplinary, the term biology is often replaced by the term life sciences or biological sciences. Biological sciences encompass a broad area of specialist subjects linked to the study of living organisms and the science behind ‘life’.
21 22 Although it was the subject of controversy (which continues to this day), Darwin’s theory quickly spread through the scientific community and soon became a central axiom of the rapidly developing science of biology. Just under half of biology graduates go into full or part-time employment, and one in ten become laboratory technicians. 46 This field overlaps with other areas of biology, particularly those of genetics and biochemistry Molecular biology is a study of the interactions of the various systems within a cell, including the interrelationships of DNA, RNA, and protein synthesis and how those interactions are regulated.
Each summer, a significant number of biology students spend eight to 10 weeks on campus pursuing independent research projects or offering valuable aid to professors in faculty-guided research. Students in our programs acquire the knowledge, tools and skills that allow them to succeed in a wide range of careers, including research in academia, government, NGOs and industry, consultancy, medicine and law, to name a few.
The next larger scale, cell biology , studies the structural and physiological properties of cells , including their internal behavior , interactions with other cells, and with their environment This is done on both the microscopic and molecular levels, for unicellular organisms such as bacteria , as well as the specialized cells of multicellular organisms such as humans Understanding the structure and function of cells is fundamental to all of the biological sciences.
